How this tracker works
What the status means
For every station the server gathers the active weather reports and advisories for the surrounding area (started, not yet expired, not cancelled) and ranks them by severity. When the most severe report is at the red level, weather reports indicate a closed station, shown as a red dot. With nothing active, the station has no local weather advisories.
Weather advisories near AMZ stations means a weather advisory is active in the area, such as lightning nearby or a wind advisory, without a report indicating a closure. Advisories and closures are always shown in the tracker's own plain wording.
Report types that indicate a closure
The kinds of weather report that indicate a closed station:
Lightning and tornadoes
The server keeps the last 30 minutes of lightning reports from national lightning databases and flags each station with lightning reported within 6 miles (and, more loosely, within 10 miles). Cloud-to-cloud flashes are ignored. The map layer shows the last 5 minutes. The all-clear time is 30 minutes after the latest report inside 6 miles.
A tornado icon appears above a station inside an active National Weather Service Tornado Warning polygon, or when a tornado warning covers the area.
Flexer reports
Signed-in Flexers can report a station closed or open from its details; the page then flags that station as reported closed or open for 30 minutes. Free accounts can report one station every 10 minutes. Reports sit beside the weather status; they don't change it.
Sources and limits
- Warehouse and station locations are obtained from Warehouse.ninja.
- Lightning data and strikes come from national lightning databases.
- Wind, air quality and tornado information comes from national weather databases such as the National Weather Service.
- Station security incidents (“Something is going on at the station. It might be closed.”) are based on police dispatch and local news reports.
- Everything is computed on this tracker's server from those public sources. Your browser talks to this tracker, to the ad network while ads are shown, and to Google Maps or PayPal if you tap those buttons.
- This is an unofficial view of public weather information. Station leadership makes the final call.
